About late fees for freelancers

Most standard freelance contracts include a late payment clause, typically 1.5% per month (18% annually). This is in line with standard commercial late payment rates and is enforceable in most jurisdictions.

Important: Always include your late fee policy in your contract or statement of work before starting a project. You cannot retroactively apply late fees that weren't agreed to in advance.

When mentioning late fees in a follow-up email, stay factual. Don't use it as a threat — present it as the agreed-upon terms that are now in effect: “Per our agreement, a 1.5% monthly late fee now applies.”
